This book is unbelievably good. It has essential covering on a wide range of topics. Like shame/guilt, pain, sexual healt aspects. I haven't found any week spots in it.
It has concrete action suggestions, is written clearly and with a relaxed tone that can only come from someone who is educated, has great experience and has got it together completely. It is down to earth and couldn't be better for a non-expert self-healer and one doesn't have to be a genious to use it.
I respect the author much and feel grateful towards him.
By the way I find the book very helpful from time to time on various issues.

Freud explores the basic properties of fear, anxiety, and touches on the sexual component of these human states of mind/body. Freud hypothesizes that the origin of anxiety is founded in the repressed memory of the human's separation from the mother's originary nutrition during the act of birth. All manifestations of anxiety are (in essence) a resurgence of this primal fear. This is crucial to the role of biology and nourishment to psychoanalysis, often glossed over in its modern variants.

I'm using the approach he describes when fighting off a panic attack. It's getting easier to deal with panic attacks now. I'm looking forward to the day when panic attacks will be gone forever. Customer Review: This book is suspiciously similar to Mr Wootton's earlier self proclaimed "revolutionary" self published work The Bipolar Advantage. We can perhaps anticipate that Wootton's next effort will be "The Schizophrenic Advantage." While introspection and an acceptance of suffering are both valuable traits it seems unlikely that Wootton has much insight in these areas, as can be confirmed if you scan the the online content here at Amazon.
The obvious downside of depression is the paralysis and inability to function or enjoy life that characterizes full clincal depression and the risk of suicide. These are the obvious reasons that Prozac and its ilk are such widely used medications for depression. For an eloquent personal account of depression I recommend William Styron's Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness. For a more thougtful analysis of the virtues of appropriate sadness you should consider The Loss of Sadness: How Psychiatry Transformed Normal Sorrow into Depressive Disorder.
The most helpful review of "Bipolar Advantage" (rated helpful by 76 readers) completely trashed it. Thanks Hieronymo!! Perhaps "The Depression Advantage" was written when Wootton was in a more introspective or depressive mood and perhaps Wootton has learned to write since his earlier effort. I suggest that if you scan the online content you will find the prose flat and the ideas trite. Curiously, other reviewers find it helpful.

Customer Review: Ms. Carlson has done a sterling job of describing life with her son, Ben. Bright and severely depressed, Ben commits suicide. Naturally this act has a very devastating impact on his surviving family members.
This book is not just about Ben, per se. It is a book about how suicide affects family members, red flags to watch for and other symptoms of severe depression. She does a good job of describing mental disorders other than depression and it is her loving, yet frank portrayal of Ben that the reader sees behind the Iron Curtain of suicide. It is a very moving book that most likely will bring tears to the eyes of readers. It is one that should be read and taken seriously.
