depression symptoms

Start Here:

A few days ago, one of my friends sent me an e-mail at around three o'clock in the morning. She was depressed and she could not find anyone around her to talk to. These days, there are increased numbers of teens who suffer from depression. Depression is an illness that can affect a person's emotions, thoughts and behavior. According to current research, four out of 100 teenagers get seriously depressed every year and 90 percent of teen suicide victims experience at least one psychological disorder, which is often depression. Generally, there is no single reason for getting depressed, and no one is immune from depression. Depression can come from various sources. Problems in relationships with friends or family members, low self-esteem, a pessimistic mind, and many other external or internal problems lead to depression. More than one of these problems may cause depression and sometimes, one may feel depressed without any specific reasons. The problem is that lots of people think depression in teenagers is mere moodiness. Some parents do not even know when their sons and daughters are suffering. My friend, whom I mentioned before, said that her parents did not know about her depressive feelings although she has been experiencing them over a year. While she could not decide whether she was just going through a phase or not, her parents were not able to detect signs of her psychological state. When we look at the fact that almost half of all people experiencing depression are unrecognized and untreated, the public education of teen depression is necessary not only for those having a problem, but also for the people around them. The best way to treat depression is to ask for help. Sadly, many teenagers don't ask, because they don't realize they are depressed. Some of them fail to recognize the symptoms of depression while the others refuse to believe they are depressed, associating depression with weakness. Teens need to be informed about the causes and symptoms of depression and understand that they aren't weak and unhealthy to be depressed. For their family and friends, it is also important to recognize the seriousness of their clinical depression as it could affect their thoughts and behavior and blind them from seeing a positive side of themselves and the world. I have experienced depression, too, but I was able to overcome it quickly with the help of my parents, a counselor and education. I talked to my parents and counselor about how I felt and they gave me objective advice. I was able to gather information about teen depression, and it helped me understand it. There are also many books that can help teens with depression. ``The Catcher in the Rye'' provides an example of teen depression. After I read it, I regained hope, self-esteem and energy from the main character, Holden Caulfield and his experience.

Mental health professionals will describe the symptoms of depression and offer a free screening Thursday at the Behavioral Health Center of Petaluma, 191 Lynch Creek Way, Suite 101. The program from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. is free, but persons planning to attend should RSVP to 762-2333. Depression strikes more than 17 million Americans a year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, but fewer than half of them seek treatment. Participants at the screening will hear Dr. Stephen J. Shimm discuss depression, followed by a short video. Participants may then complete an anonymous written test and discuss the results with a mental health professional.

Mental health professionals will offer free depression screenings Thursday as part of National Depression Screening Day at the Behavioral Health Center in Petaluma. The program, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., will offer information about the signs and symptoms of depression, which professionals say strikes more than 17 million Americans each year. The event will include a brief talk on the causes and treatments of depression, followed by a short video. Participants may complete an anonymous written screening and have the opportunity to discuss the results with a professional. Co-sponsoring the event are the Behavioral Health Center, Sonoma County Mental Health, Petaluma People Services Center and Petaluma Valley Hospital. To participate call 762-2333.

Amy Howdyshell is conflicted about setting her clock an hour forward tonight, three weeks earlier than in years past. Having extra sunlight later in the day could result in fewer customers at the Santa Rosa tanning salon where Howdy-shell is a manager. But darker mornings mean more guilt-free snooze time. ``I don't feel so bad sleeping in,'' said Howdyshell, a student at Santa Rosa Junior College. ``Once the sun's out, I feel like I need to start my day.'' Many people have mixed emotions about the early start to daylight-saving time, which begins Sunday at 2 a.m., marking the need to push clocks forward one hour. The change normally doesn't occur until the first Sunday in April but this year comes before winter's official departure. People are springing forward 10 days before the start of spring, which is March 21. For some, the change is cause for celebration. Those who exercise in the evening or like to barbecue will enjoy having that extra splash of sun. ``I'm excited,'' said Kari Cagle, a Santa Rosa mother of two. ``We're summer people, and it seems like you get a longer day.'' For best friends Bridget O'Day and Erin Conway, extra sunlight will mean they can linger longer at Humboldt Park, where they spread out recently on a blanket with O'Day's 8-month-old son, Patrick. The boy is named for his uncle, a 20-year-old Marine lance corporal who was killed March 25, 2003, when his tank overturned in the Euphrates River near Nasiriyah, Iraq. Bridget O'Day's husband also is a Marine gunner and is currently in Iraq. ``It's definitely a good thing,'' she said of the time change and the chance to spend more time with her friend. ``It gets my mind off every other stress that I have.'' Not everyone is pleased, however, with an earlier start to daylight-saving time. Congress in 2005 decided to move the time change up three weeks -- and delay going back again until a week later in the fall -- as a way of saving energy. But an extra month of darker mornings could translate to lower output for some people and actually exacerbate mood disorders. Psychologists fear that sufferers of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, might find their symptoms of depression harder to shake. One of the treatments for SAD is exposure to light from natural or artificial sources, particularly early in the morning, said Robin Raike, director of outpatient behavioral health services for the St. Joseph's Health System, which owns Memorial Hospital. ``It makes sense to me that if there's less light, people are going to stay in their down state more,'' Raike said. It's unnatural as it is to wake up in the dark. For millions of years, until the arrival of artificial light, humans got up with the sun and went to bed when it set. ``Human physiology hasn't really adapted,'' Raike said. ``Some people are more sensitive to it than others.'' People who work at night might also find the time change a discomfort. Michelle DeFors, owner of Michelle Marie's Patisserie in Montgomery Village, said her bakers struggle to acclimate themselves to sleeping during the day so that they can be alert and productive at night. Daylight-saving time means they will have to adjust to going to sleep earlier and waking up earlier. ``People tend to show up a little late,'' she said. ``They're not really as on the ball when they lose that hour of sleep.''

Among the mysteries in the deaths of a Santa Rosa couple is why an apparently healthy 61-year-old man would hang himself along with his ill wife. Bill Andrews was relatively young and had much to live for, including a son, a stepson and a granddaughter. What would possess him to enter into a suicide pact with his wife and act on it? In a note left behind, Andrews wrote generally about not wanting to go on without his wife, said Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Paul Henry. Friends of the retired software executive speculated Andrews may have become depressed over his wife's illness. "The only thing we can figure is it wore him down as well," said Bill Mulert, a former president of the neighborhood association in the well-appointed Fountaingrove subdivision where the couple lived. Mulert said Karen Andrews, 52, had become frail and withdrawn. "Everybody was worried about her," he said. "The shocking thing was Bill seemed to be pretty strong through all of this." Suicide pacts are rare. Only a handful have been reported in Sonoma County in the past 20 years. But depression and suicide among older adults are not uncommon. Americans over 65 comprised only 13 percent of the U.S. population but accounted for 18 percent of suicide deaths in 2000, according to the most recent data from the National Institute of Mental Health. Bill Andrews was four years shy of reaching that demographic, but the circumstances of his death share commonalities with many cases of older adult suicide. Chronic illness is a major risk factor for depression in older adults, both for the ill person and for loved ones entrusted with their care. Losing a spouse can be another significant blow. Dr. Mark Miller, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, said men who came of age in an era when women ran the household may find themselves unable to manage basic tasks and sink into a debilitating funk. "When their wives die first, they often feel like a fish out of water. Many of them tell you they don't know where to start," said Miller, co-author of "Living Longer Depression Free: A Family Guide to Recognizing, Treating and Preventing Depression in Later Life." Miller speculated Bill Andrews may have doubted his ability to handle life on his own. The suicides "show a very enmeshed relationship. You wonder about his coping skills and how dependent he was on his wife," Miller said. The deliberative nature of the Santa Rosa couple's demise also bears similarities to the way in which older adults express depression and take their own lives. Miller said older adults tend to ruminate before deciding on suicide and once a decision is made often complete the act. "It's not just a cry for help, like it is sometimes for younger people," he said. Older adults also tend to keep their inner pain to themselves, making it harder to detect the problem. National data show up to 75 percent of elderly suicide victims had seen a primary care physician in the month before their deaths. "You have to infer the diagnosis and pull the symptoms out of someone," Miller said. "If they intimate that they don't want to live anymore or don't have the strength to go on, you have to pointedly ask, 'Have you felt bad enough you don't want to wake up in the morning?'" Friends said Karen Andrews had gone to multiple doctors seeking help for her chronic pain. It's unknown if the couple sought help for emotional issues. Dr. Sharon Brangman, who oversees the geriatrics program at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, N.Y., said in general the medical community does a poor job of recognizing depression in older adults and treating it. She said the symptoms of depression can be physical and psychological and mirror other illnesses. She said physicians and loved ones often rationalize late-life depression, chalking it up to the loss of a spouse or some other cause. "We say, 'We'd be depressed too if we had a chronic illness or a spouse died,'" Brangman said. "Often, then, we don't take the next steps as physicians to treat it."

I love me some Texas! haha! Hurrican Dolly, is just a tropical depression now so I won't blow away!! hehehe! FAQ: Hey Mark Anthony, what grosses you out? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJcenqhtl50 Does your channel have any oddball characters? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGTj8UAp_eQ Do you ever talk to yourself while driving? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A946VgQEY7I You Know You're In/ From Texas When: You actually burn your hand opening the car door. You can say 110 degrees without fainting. When it rains, everyone is smiling. You eat hot chilies to cool your mouth off. You learn that a seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron. You no longer associate bridges with water. You discover that you can get a sunburn through your car window. It's so hot the birds have to use pot holders to pull worms out of the ground. You know the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance. You break a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m. before work. You realize asphalt has a liquid state. The temperature drops below 95 and you feel a bit chilly. You discover that in July it takes only two fingers to drive your car. Hot water comes out of both taps. You attend a formal event in your best clothes, your finest jewelry and your cowboy boots. It's a common misconception that everyone speaks with a Texas accent. Y'all just don't know what y'all are talkin' about. [m]ark [a]nthony

The Bipolar Handbook: Real-Life Questions with Up-to-Date Answers
by Wes Burgess
Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: For twenty years, Dr. Wes Burgess has been writing down all the questions asked by his bipolar patients. In this book he thoughtfully answers each question, providing a safe friendly environment for the reader.

What I appreciated most about this book was all the information I had never read in other books on bipolar disorder. I had no idea that left untreated, this disorder can grow worse as you age. This is enough of a reason to convince anyone to keep taking their medication. Stopping medications seems to be an issue that the author addresses numerous times because uncontrolled manic episodes can make the disease worse. It was interesting to realize that it is high levels of adrenaline that cause manic symptoms.

Suicide is also dealt with in this book. Thirty percent of individuals with bipolar disorder will attempt to kill themselves. Some of the other symptoms include: insomnia, intrusive thoughts, rapid speech, memory problems, obsessions, hypersomnia (sleeping during the day), spending sprees, hypersexuality, anxious depression, fatigue, anxiety, social isolation, fear, panic, paranoia and auditory hallucinations.

Left untreated or treated with the wrong medications this disease gets worse over time. The author talks about medications he prescribes and gives detailed information about each one. He mentions Geodon and Ativan as well as numerous other medications that work for bipolar disorder.

The Everything Health Guide To Thyroid Disease: Professional Advice on Gettin...
by Theodore C. Friedman, Winnie Yu
Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: Having thyroid problems for over 12 years and having read every book ever published on thyroid disease, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. What I found was the best book there is on thyroid problems! Not only was it an easy read (finished it in one sitting), it was full of useful information from both a clinical doctor and reseach doctor's point of view (Dr. Friedman is both). I have since thrown away all my other thyroid books and this book is the only reference I use. I recommend this book to everyone with thyroid problems and their friends and family to help anyone understand this complex and debilitating health epidemic.

The Agoraphobia Workbook: A Comprehensive Program to End Your Fear of Symptom...
by C. Alec Pollard, Elke Zuercher-White
Amazon Price: $17.96
Customer Review: Some quick thoughts between classes on the book "The Agoraphobia Workbook" (by Pollard and Zuercher-White). Note: I'd recommend buying it new or like new--as a previous owner MAY have written in it.

I've had agoraphobia for awhile. I've gotten a degree in psychology, seen therapists, psychiatrists, taken many prescribed drugs (ativan, klonopin, prozac--and now paxil and xanax), tried hypnosis, acupuncture, meditation, and read over 20 books on panic attacks and agoraphobia.

HOWEVER, this is the first book that really appreciates the significance of internal symptoms (feared sensations) and the fear of symptom attacks (anticipatory fear). Other books mention anticipatory anxiety and catastrophizing and so on, but NONE address it this well.

This book also thoroughly explains WHY my agoraphobia HASN'T gone away even though I KNOW it's irrational and then describes how to beat it by developing structure, finding discipline to follow it (time, motivation and effort) AND doing things that will at times be uncomfortable.

What I have been doing--waiting it out and trying to push on
with back-up--HASN'T WORKED. It's been two years with varied success--ups and downs--but now it's time to get well. Having read so many other panic/agoraphobia books, I wasn't very hopeful; but after 4 chapters I'm convinced that this workbook is MUCH more relevant to my issues than other "panic" books AND much more likely to actually change my behavior.

The book explains the 4 components of agoraphobic fear:
(1) external signals--feared situations/ places/ activities like being far from home, driving over bridges and physical exertion...
(2) internal signals--feared sensations like heart beating fast/ hard, dizziness/ light-headedness/ faint-like feelings and feeling dissociated/ detached/ outside of oneself...which leads to...
(3) symptom attacks--panic, etc., though, like most of us, I've never experienced the actual...
(4) catastrophe I fear (gone insane, permanently lost control, fainted and crashed while driving, lost my job, etc.).

Usually by the time I'm four chapters in, I've begun to realize that the book I'm reading is saying the same thing as all the others, and my sense of hope for a cure slowly dissipates. For whatever reason--clear explanations, alternate foci/ emphasis, etc.--this book is different. I'm reading it and still very hopeful, and even mo...

Happiness Is a Choice: Symptoms, Causes, and Cures of Depression

The book is written by Christians with a Biblical perspective, which is awesome for those who want to read a recovery book that emphasizes the spiritual approach to health and wholeness.

The Depression Advantage
by Tom Wootton
Amazon Price: $15.16
Customer Review: This book is suspiciously similar to Mr Wootton's earlier self proclaimed "revolutionary" self published work The Bipolar Advantage. We can perhaps anticipate that Wootton's next effort will be "The Schizophrenic Advantage." While introspection and an acceptance of suffering are both valuable traits it seems unlikely that Wootton has much insight in these areas, as can be confirmed if you scan the the online content here at Amazon.

The obvious downside of depression is the paralysis and inability to function or enjoy life that characterizes full clincal depression and the risk of suicide. These are the obvious reasons that Prozac and its ilk are such widely used medications for depression. For an eloquent personal account of depression I recommend William Styron's Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness. For a more thougtful analysis of the virtues of appropriate sadness you should consider The Loss of Sadness: How Psychiatry Transformed Normal Sorrow into Depressive Disorder.

The most helpful review of "Bipolar Advantage" (rated helpful by 76 readers) completely trashed it. Thanks Hieronymo!! Perhaps "The Depression Advantage" was written when Wootton was in a more introspective or depressive mood and perhaps Wootton has learned to write since his earlier effort. I suggest that if you scan the online content you will find the prose flat and the ideas trite. Curiously, other reviewers find it helpful.

The Comfort of Home for Alzheimer's Disease: A Guide for Caregivers (The Comf...
by Maria M. Meyer, Paula Derr
Amazon Price: $18.96
Customer Review:
Reviewed by Mary Durfor for RebeccasReads (6/08)

"The Comfort of Home for Alzheimer's Disease, A Guide for Caregivers" is an excellent reference book for anyone who is involved in the care of an Alzheimer's patient. The book is well organized, clearly written, with some very simple and effective forms that can be copied and used to ensure that all caregivers have the essential information they need to provide competent care. The authors emphasize the need for the caregivers to obtain support for themselves, and give practical advice about where to go and who to contact for assistance.

The book is divided into three sections. Part One: Getting Ready gives the background about the disease so the reader has a foundation of understanding. This section deals with the physical changes and mental challenges that the typical Alzheimer's patient will go through. There is concrete, practical advice about how to set up a safe environment for providing care, as well as how to find, screen, and hire additional caregivers to manage the stress and workload for the main caregiver. Information is provided to assist with financial, legal and medical planning. The health care needs of the Alzheimer's patient are detailed, with tips on how to handle these needs. Part Two: Day-by-Day Living with Alzheimer's Disease is extremely helpful, with suggestions on following a simple, written plan of activities for a typical day, so all caregivers can keep a similar schedule to minimize disruption for the patient, which is often frightening and confusing to these patients. Caregiver burnout is explored, with a checklist to prompt the caregiver about what some of the signs and symptoms might be. Suggestions for improving communication are clear and practical, and the specifics of exactly how to provide hands-on care are provided. Part Three: Additional Resources gives contact information for the many organizations dedicated to helping Alzheimer's patients' caregivers with their daunting task of providing full-time care in this sometimes overwhelming and frustrating disease. A helpful glossary of terms the caregiver will encounter during their journey is provided, and the Index is quite helpful in navigating the book for specific issues.

As a 30-year veteran of the home care industry, I feel that I am qualified to provide meaningful commentary on this particular book. I am a Registered Nurse, with a Master's degree in Nursing, and I w...

Just Because You`re Depressed Doesn`t Mean You Have Depression, Depression Is...

Happiness is a Choice: A Manual on the Symptoms, Causes, and Cures of Depression
by Frank B. Minirth, Paul D. Meier
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: In my opinion, Minirth and Meier have written a helpful book on helping people deal with depression. While the authors certainly allow for heredity and other factors as causes of depression, the main focus is for the reader to take responsibility for his/her own life.

The book is divided into 3 major sections:

1. WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
2. WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION?
3. HOW CAN ONE OVERCOME DEPRESSION?

I particularly enjoyed reading the last section as it is full of practical suggestions for dealing with and overcoming depression. Although I do not consider myself as someone who struggles with depression, I found the book to be full of practical suggestions to keep me from approaching the brink of depression.

Again, the authors' focus is for the reader to take responsibility for his/her own life rather than to just let circumstances dictate one's response and approach to life.

While not probably the final authority on depression, the book is still a helpful aid to fighting depression. While the authors are Christians, anyone, non-Christians included, will benefit from the suggestions.

Read and enjoy. Recommended.
