The Johns Hopkins Complete Home Guide to Symptoms & Remedies by Editors of The Johns Hopkins Medical Letter Health After 50, Simeon Margolis Amazon Price: $13.57
Customer Review: This book has a rather unique layout that actually makes it easier to use than most similar books. The first part of the book focuses on symptoms. You look up your primary symptom, and then look to see if there are associated symptoms that match yours. If you have a match of symptoms then you read the different possible diagnosis for those symptoms and the distinguishing features of each diagnosis. The best way to illustrate how easy it is to use an example. Suppose you see some blood in your urine. You look up "Blood in the urine" and find that there are two subdivisions - with urinary difficulty or incontinence, without urinary difficulty or incontinence. If there is no urinary difficulty or incontinence then there are five possible diagnoses provided. Each of these five provides distinguishing features so you can easily figure out if you match one of them.
The second part of the book details the disorders provided in the symptom diagnosis portion. So, if you determined that you probably have an esophageal stricture you can look that disorder up and find out what it is, what causes it, prevention strategies, diagnostic techniques, how to treat it, and most importantly, when to call a doctor. With clear writing and lavish illustrations it provides a clear understanding of the problem. The John Hopkins Complete Home Guide to Symptoms & Remedies is a very highly recommended book to have handy in every home.
Symptom to Diagnosis (Lange) by Scott D.C. Stern, Diane Altkorn, Adam Cifu Amazon Price: $36.21
Customer Review: The book is a very good aquisition for everyone in clinical training, being usefull for people just starting ward training and being an excelent review for the final years to keep you uptodate and proficiente in ward work.
I am at my final year of medicine in Portugal and really apreciate the straithfoward way the information is organised: you can at the same time improve you factual knowlege about diangnosing and also the way you think when you find a new person requiring a diagnosis. This last point is what makes the book stand out of the croud. Also the evidence based aproach is very interesting and usefull in a day to day basis
Although some topics are lacking they will probably be adressed in the second edition.
Not 5 starts because of the lack of some content (4,5 stars)

The author explains the pathophysiology and differential diagnosis for all of these. Overall, very helpful as a reference or to read straight through.

Harvard Medical School Guide to Healing Your Sinuses (Harvard Medical School ... by Ralph Metson, Steven Mardon Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: The Harvard Guide to Healing Your Sinuses is a valuable resource, which is written in easy-to-understand language that details various sinus conditions, including ones that might seem like sinusitis but are not, and numerous strategies for treating them. In addition, discussions of treatments include helpful thoughts on various methods of sinus surgery, how to prepare for surgery if needed, and what to expect.
I appreciate how, on pages 162-163, Dr. Metson and Mr. Mardon cite empty nose syndrome (ENS) as a "troubling phenomenon," which results from an overly aggressive surgery of the turbinates (inner nasal mucus-producing tissue that performs many critical functions). The description of ENS is accurate, and I am grateful it is noted as a complication of surgery, as not all sinus self-help books acknowledge ENS.
When discussing treatments, The Harvard Guide to Healing Your Sinuses mentions zicam, which is the oral spray form of zinc. The authors note while zinc has been shown to reduce the duration of a cold, particularly when used at the onset of symptoms, it must be sprayed into the nose every four hours for one to two weeks to be effective. A word of caution, though, which also should be highlighted, is that spraying high concentrations of zicam in the nose can lead to burning and destruction of olfactory epithelium, the nerve cells responsible for smell. Consequently, some users of zicam have permanently lost their sense of smell.
This book definitely has much useful information on sinusitis from a highly reputable source. It is a great reference book for sinus sufferers.
