The Everything Health Guide To Thyroid Disease: Professional Advice on Gettin... by Theodore C. Friedman, Winnie Yu Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: Having thyroid problems for over 12 years and having read every book ever published on thyroid disease, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. What I found was the best book there is on thyroid problems! Not only was it an easy read (finished it in one sitting), it was full of useful information from both a clinical doctor and reseach doctor's point of view (Dr. Friedman is both). I have since thrown away all my other thyroid books and this book is the only reference I use. I recommend this book to everyone with thyroid problems and their friends and family to help anyone understand this complex and debilitating health epidemic.
The Bipolar Handbook: Real-Life Questions with Up-to-Date Answers by Wes Burgess Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: For twenty years, Dr. Wes Burgess has been writing down all the questions asked by his bipolar patients. In this book he thoughtfully answers each question, providing a safe friendly environment for the reader.
What I appreciated most about this book was all the information I had never read in other books on bipolar disorder. I had no idea that left untreated, this disorder can grow worse as you age. This is enough of a reason to convince anyone to keep taking their medication. Stopping medications seems to be an issue that the author addresses numerous times because uncontrolled manic episodes can make the disease worse. It was interesting to realize that it is high levels of adrenaline that cause manic symptoms.
Suicide is also dealt with in this book. Thirty percent of individuals with bipolar disorder will attempt to kill themselves. Some of the other symptoms include: insomnia, intrusive thoughts, rapid speech, memory problems, obsessions, hypersomnia (sleeping during the day), spending sprees, hypersexuality, anxious depression, fatigue, anxiety, social isolation, fear, panic, paranoia and auditory hallucinations.
Left untreated or treated with the wrong medications this disease gets worse over time. The author talks about medications he prescribes and gives detailed information about each one. He mentions Geodon and Ativan as well as numerous other medications that work for bipolar disorder.

The Agoraphobia Workbook: A Comprehensive Program to End Your Fear of Symptom... by C. Alec Pollard, Elke Zuercher-White Amazon Price: $17.95
Customer Review: Some quick thoughts between classes on the book "The Agoraphobia Workbook" (by Pollard and Zuercher-White). Note: I'd recommend buying it new or like new--as a previous owner MAY have written in it.
I've had agoraphobia for awhile. I've gotten a degree in psychology, seen therapists, psychiatrists, taken many prescribed drugs (ativan, klonopin, prozac--and now paxil and xanax), tried hypnosis, acupuncture, meditation, and read over 20 books on panic attacks and agoraphobia.
HOWEVER, this is the first book that really appreciates the significance of internal symptoms (feared sensations) and the fear of symptom attacks (anticipatory fear). Other books mention anticipatory anxiety and catastrophizing and so on, but NONE address it this well.
This book also thoroughly explains WHY my agoraphobia HASN'T gone away even though I KNOW it's irrational and then describes how to beat it by developing structure, finding discipline to follow it (time, motivation and effort) AND doing things that will at times be uncomfortable.
What I have been doing--waiting it out and trying to push on
with back-up--HASN'T WORKED. It's been two years with varied success--ups and downs--but now it's time to get well. Having read so many other panic/agoraphobia books, I wasn't very hopeful; but after 4 chapters I'm convinced that this workbook is MUCH more relevant to my issues than other "panic" books AND much more likely to actually change my behavior.
The book explains the 4 components of agoraphobic fear:
(1) external signals--feared situations/ places/ activities like being far from home, driving over bridges and physical exertion...
(2) internal signals--feared sensations like heart beating fast/ hard, dizziness/ light-headedness/ faint-like feelings and feeling dissociated/ detached/ outside of oneself...which leads to...
(3) symptom attacks--panic, etc., though, like most of us, I've never experienced the actual...
(4) catastrophe I fear (gone insane, permanently lost control, fainted and crashed while driving, lost my job, etc.).
Usually by the time I'm four chapters in, I've begun to realize that the book I'm reading is saying the same thing as all the others, and my sense of hope for a cure slowly dissipates. For whatever reason--clear explanations, alternate foci/ emphasis, etc.--this book is different. I'm reading it and still very hopeful, and even mo...
Happiness Is a Choice: Symptoms, Causes, and Cures of Depression by Frank Minirth, Paul Meier Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: An excellent resource for those struggling with codependency and various other psychic illnesses. The book is written by Christians with a Biblical perspective, which is awesome for those who want to read a recovery book that emphasizes the spiritual approach to health and wholeness.
The Depression Advantage by Tom Wootton Amazon Price: $15.16
Customer Review: This book is suspiciously similar to Mr Wootton's earlier self proclaimed "revolutionary" self published work The Bipolar Advantage. We can perhaps anticipate that Wootton's next effort will be "The Schizophrenic Advantage." While introspection and an acceptance of suffering are both valuable traits it seems unlikely that Wootton has much insight in these areas, as can be confirmed if you scan the the online content here at Amazon.
The obvious downside of depression is the paralysis and inability to function or enjoy life that characterizes full clincal depression and the risk of suicide. These are the obvious reasons that Prozac and its ilk are such widely used medications for depression. For an eloquent personal account of depression I recommend William Styron's Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness. For a more thougtful analysis of the virtues of appropriate sadness you should consider The Loss of Sadness: How Psychiatry Transformed Normal Sorrow into Depressive Disorder.
The most helpful review of "Bipolar Advantage" (rated helpful by 76 readers) completely trashed it. Thanks Hieronymo!! Perhaps "The Depression Advantage" was written when Wootton was in a more introspective or depressive mood and perhaps Wootton has learned to write since his earlier effort. I suggest that if you scan the online content you will find the prose flat and the ideas trite. Curiously, other reviewers find it helpful.
This is an exceptional book that gives the reader tips on how to care for family members with Alzheimer's Disease. Each chapter discusses some behaviors caregivers might encounter along with tips on how to make the home safe.
The goal of the book is to help family members with Alzheimer's to stay at home for as long as they can before having to go into a nursing home. The chapter on reducing frustration for family members was very interesting and informative. Ideas on how to reduce this frustration included information on noise levels, changing of furniture and daily routines. The author also gave resources on how to look for nursing homes, what one needed to do to prepare the family member for the move and addressing end-of-life issues.
"The Comfort of Home for Alzheimer's Disease: A Guide for Caregivers" would be a wonderful resource to have; it was easy to read and the suggestions were very helpful.
Happiness is a Choice: A Manual on the Symptoms, Causes, and Cures of Depression by Frank B. Minirth, Paul D. Meier Amazon Price: Customer Review: In my opinion, Minirth and Meier have written a helpful book on helping people deal with depression. While the authors certainly allow for heredity and other factors as causes of depression, the main focus is for the reader to take responsibility for his/her own life.
The book is divided into 3 major sections:
1. WHAT IS DEPRESSION?
2. WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION?
3. HOW CAN ONE OVERCOME DEPRESSION?
I particularly enjoyed reading the last section as it is full of practical suggestions for dealing with and overcoming depression. Although I do not consider myself as someone who struggles with depression, I found the book to be full of practical suggestions to keep me from approaching the brink of depression.
Again, the authors' focus is for the reader to take responsibility for his/her own life rather than to just let circumstances dictate one's response and approach to life.
While not probably the final authority on depression, the book is still a helpful aid to fighting depression. While the authors are Christians, anyone, non-Christians included, will benefit from the suggestions.
